During World War II, as well as working on illustrations for gun manuals, Ralph was stationed on the Isle of Islay and later at Start Point in Devon where he worked in radar. There he produced several paintings depicting radar operations and RAF life. These were labelled "Top Secret" and were not shown publicly until they were given to the Glasgow galleries in 2008.
